Herbert A. “A.J.” (Stump) Stokes, Jr., 87, of Hilliard, FL passed away at his home on Thursday, January 22, 2026. He was born in Callahan, FL on November 23, 1938, to the late Herbert A. Stokes, Sr. and Irene Mae Sikes Stokes. A.J. retired from Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation in December of 2000 after 36 years of service. He loved to spend time with his family and friends. Taking his grandchildren on trips always made him so happy. He devoted countless hours to farming, cows, horses and growing vegetables. A.J. loved his church, church family and the Lord. He enjoyed playing music on string instruments.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by 2-sisters: Nancy Stokes and Rhoda Stokes; brother: Roy Lewis Stokes; and grandson: Cody P. Lyons.
He is survived by his loving wife: Barbara Stokes; 6-children: Herbert A. “Snorkie” Stokes, III (Vanessa), Ellen “Ellie” King (Tommy), Christian P. Lyons (Karen), Patrick D. Stokes, Michael Stokes (Jessie) and Sheard L. Stokes (Rachel); grandchildren: Herbert A. (Katie) Stokes IV, Jenny Mae (Justin) Self, Amanda (Dusty) Bishop, Donnie (Michelle) King, Thomas King, Eric Lyons, Rayann (Gage) Moore, Trinity Stokes, Jade Stephens, Wayman Stephens, John Stokes, Abigail Stokes, Blake Stokes and Joseph Stokes; and 10-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 31, 2026 at First Baptist Church of Hilliard with Pastor Ryan Mason officiating. Memorialization will be by cremation.
