James “Jim” Thornton Byrd, Jr., 72, of Folkston, Georgia, passed away at his home Saturday, April 18, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was born August 21, 1953, in Clearwater, FL. to the late James Thornton Byrd Sr. and Margaret Sue Jones Byrd.
Jim was a man whose life was defined by generosity, kindness, and an unwavering dedication to others. He found true joy in taking care of people, always ready to lend a hand or offer comfort without hesitation. He was known for his selfless nature, he would give anyone the shirt off his back, never expecting anything in return. He was a natural storyteller and had a love for western country music. Above all, he cherished his family. He took great pride in the time he spent with them, whether sharing laughter, passing on wisdom, or creating something special together. He was a hardworking man and had a unique talent for making custom work toys. He was a great teacher who was patient and encouraging. His legacy is one of kindness, generosity, and love, a life well lived and deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife: Beverly Phillips Byrd; daughter: Christina Louise Johnson; son: James Thornton Byrd III.
He is survived by his loving partner for the last 9 years: Joan Jones; daughter: Cynthia Anne (Hans) Byrd-Zieger; son: Jason Lee Byrd; daughter-in-law: Dawn Davis Crowe; grandchildren: Jamie Lee Johnson, Jolie Johnson, Jacob Banes, Jaden Johnson, John Johnson, Shelby Byrd, Lorrie Byrd, Jim David Byrd, Kodi Current, Mackenzi Brazier, LeAnne Byrd (Tony Pafford), Zanie Mariah Byrd, James Michael (George) Byrd, and Gannon Byrd; great-grandchildren: Jamison Carter, Hayden Carter, Gryffin Tyler, Oaklynn Byrd, Logan Byrd, Ansley Byrd, Easton Byrd, Rylan Pafford, Serenity Pafford, Tony Pafford III, Aunica (Colton) Crews, Cambria Brown, and Raven Byrd; great-great-grandchildren: Oaklynn Crews and James Makia Broestler; sister: Debbie Nickerson Byrd; brother: Glenn Byrd; numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members also survive.
Memorialization will be by cremation.
A service will be held at Little Pheobe Church in Folkston on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. All flowers and donations can be sent to 925 Humphries Road, Folkston, GA 31537. We will have lunch in the fellowship hall after the service. Covered dishes or drinks are welcomed but not required.
