Laverne “Buddy” Carter, 80, passed away at his residence in Brantley County on Wednesday, January 07, 2026. He was born on June 18, 1945, in Waycross, Georgia to the late Alton John Carter and Lorene Beatrice Carter. Mr. Carter was a veteran of the United States Army where served his country in Vietnam. He retired as the Transportation Director for the Charlton County Board of Education after 30 years. Buddy was a member of Sandhill Baptist Church where he served faithfully, always willing to support the church whether it was financially, giving of his time to keep the grass cut, helping cook, or any other way the church needed support. He loved to be outdoors working outside where you could always find him on his John Deere tractor. Above everything he loved his family dearly and was always there to support them. He loved to travel with his family and was an avid fan and supporter of Ella’s SPB Travel Basketball Team. He loved helping his wife raise bulldogs and even has a special needs bulldog for himself named Izzy that he loved.
He is preceded in death by his daughter: Annsley Victoria Carter; siblings: Althea Starling, Jackie Carter, and Margie Crews.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years: Faye Carter of Brantley County; daughter and son-in-law: Rebecca (Jeff) Highsmith of Brantley County; five grandchildren; Annsley, Annabelle, Ellis, Ella, and Jacob Highsmith all of Brantley County; sister and brother-in-law: Ethelleene (Lamar) Kitchings of Charlton County; three brothers and sisters-in-law: Tommy (Sheila) Carter of Charlton County, Timmy (Vicki) Carter of Charlton County, and David Wheaton of Florida; special nephew: Zach (Kricket) Carter of Charlton County; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other friends and family members also survive.
Graveside services will be held on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Sandhill Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Trent Long and Emitt Powell officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorialization will be by cremation.
