Waycross

Mrs. Lolette Sands Askew, 93, of Folkston, Georgia, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2025, at Hospice House in Waycross, Georgia.

Born in San Diego, California, on April 5, 1932, Mrs. Askew was the daughter of the late Clarence Sands and Etheridge Sands (née Durrance). Her father served his country in World War II.

Lolette grew up with a sharp mind and spirit that stayed with her all her days. She married Fred Davis Askew, Jr., who served honorably in the United States Navy during World War II. The couple made their home in Folkston, where they raised four children together. Mr. Askew preceded her in death.

Mrs. Askew devoted her life to her family as a homemaker and was known for her love of reading and learning. She delighted in exploring a wide range of subjects and remained lively and thoughtful until her final days.

She is survived by her sister, Bernadette Sands Livingston of Pennsylvania; and by her four children; LaDonna Askew Sheffield and her husband Harvey of Liberty, South Carolina; Keith Askew and his wife Denise Bailey of Georgetown, Georgia; Vance Askew and his wife Lynette Chesser of Richmond Hill, Georgia; and Dana Askew Pearce and her husband Bob of Waycross, Georgia.

Mrs. Askew also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Steven Sheffield and his wife Danielle; Andrew Sheffield and his wife Megan; Joshua Askew and his wife Kellie; Jennifer Denise Askew; Brittany Bristow; Laura-Leanne Askew; Sandra DeLeigh Poole; and Seth Bedell Pearce and his wife Amy.

She was blessed with 17 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Askew’s memory will be cherished by her family and friends who knew and loved her gentle spirit, sharp mind, and steadfast devotion to those she held dear.

A private service to honor her life will be held at a later date, and she will be laid to rest in Folkston, Georgia.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly request that donations be made to Hospice Satilla House of Waycross, Georgia, in gratitude for the compassionate care given to Mrs. Askew in her final days.
